  duburbia

duburbia is a band from the Virginia Beach and Norfolk area. From out of the surf / skate / snowboard / wake-board / skim etc. culture arose the creative talents of four local musicians. Lead singer Jay Kelly and guitar player Nick (the man) Clark had been playing together since they met in '96, cultivating their unique style of music over the years. Jay and Nick formed a short lived band in '97, Badfish, which never quite made it passed their party lifestyle. Through their band's talented bass player, Ben Grillo, they were introduced to a friend, Matt (stoopid) Maxwell, who was learning the bass. When Jay and Nick were searching for a new bass player several years later, Matt's quick progression on his instrument made him just the right person. Finally, a drummer that fitted exactly into the sound and tied everything together answered a music store ad (see, those things really do work), and Mike Berlind rounded out the duburbia family on drums.
While duburbia's sound quickly brings to mind the name Sublime, the members of duburbia quickly point out that they are not a Sublime cover band or rip off. They admit that this is an influence, but is only one band in a long line of influences from before and after Sublime. Some other influences include the Rutz, the Clash, the Specials, Bad Brains, Fishbone, and more recently Slightly Stoopid, Bargain Music, the Expendables, and many others. duburbia, however, is not a copy of any one band and is unique and original.
